The stories of science fiction take place in alien worlds and distant futures, but the hair has stayed frozen in time, until now.
Growing up in the 90's watching Star Trek: the Next Generation, I really took for granted the hairstyles that I saw on screen, because they seemed "normal," like something is see on any modern person. When my burgeoning fandom found its way to the original series, I saw right away what was hidden to my contemporary gaze. The hair on the show was just an exaggerated version of the hair of the period.
On its surface, it felt a little ridiculous that a woman serving on a starship would head to the ship's salon once a week to get her hair styled into a beehive, but on a deeper level, it created connection with the audience of the day, which allowed people to relate to characters from the distant future, and see their struggles as their own.
With these images, we are asking how classic characters from Sci-fi would wear their hair today. Barbarella, Styled by @meganhairdreams, Deanna Troi, styled by @laylaslocks, and Trinity, styled by @harshhaircutz, represent three different decades of fashion. Each look references the original, but makes it contemporary.

Deanna Troi She's the ship's counselor on the Enterprise D. She brings emotion and empathy, and a sensitivity to when someone's "hiding something" to the crew. Her telepathic abilities are thanks to her mixed heritage as a half Human/ half Betazoid, which is also a source of much of her internal conflict. In this modern interpretation of her iconic curls, her headband has been replaced by a touch of uniform matching color, and the shape is an exaggerated version of a curly shag featuring her natural curl pattern. The shape draws inspiration from modern curly shags worn by Natasha Lyonne and Zendaya. Hair: @laylaslocks MUA: @pavyartist Model: @suraya_barbee Photography: @nickjohnsonphoto
Trinity Trinity embodies intelligence, strength, and resolve. She fought against the enslavement of humanity with both her body and her mind, and thus became one of the iconic women of sci fi. For this shoot, Trinity is reimagined with a style that reflects her sleek, controlled energy while still feeling modern and editorial. She wears a sculpted, high-gloss look with clean lines but also deliberate dishevelment, designed to mirror Trinity’s power and precision. Adding a touch of red was key to this modernized adaptation. It is meant to represent awakening and self-liberation. This style is minimalist in structure but maximal in attitude. Barbarella In this 1968 sci fi epic filmed in the exploitation era of cinema, Barbarella confronts her own repressed human nature, and in a final showdown, she’s tortured for daring to enjoy her newfound sexuality. This iconic style is known for its voluminous layers, and some of the same techniques that would have been used to create this look in the 60’s, like hot rollers, were incorporated. With the model’s naturally curly hair, Megan could take advantage of their natural volume and create raw texture while still keeping that classic shape. This hairstyle is a great example of how popular styles in history get recycled into modern trends with Barbarella/Farrah Faucet inspo photos still getting shown in salons today. An example of this is Miley Cyrus’s grammy look last year, which was heavily inspired by Barbarella. Hair: @meganhairdreams MUA: @pavyartist Model: @beauty_by.el Photography: @nickjohnsonphoto
