owner and Star stylist @laylaslocks

Layla is a northwest native who grew up in both Washington and Oregon, but has made her home in Eugene for the past 20 years.Hair was not Layla’s first career path. She got her degree in Biology in 1999 from Whitman College and spent her first few years out of school as a medical research assistant at OHSU. This experience taught her that she loved learning science, but not the repetitive, mind numbing task of gathering the data. She needed something with more variety.

Her path to hair was not an obvious one. She was part of a bellydance troupe, Tribalation! in 2004 when she was gifted a hair fall from her troupe mate Joy. This gift spawned a love of creating hair pieces filled with yarn, braids, and of course, locs! By 2005, she created a website selling her hair pieces to bellydancers, fire performers, and festival goers around the world.

In 2007, she took her love of creative hair to beauty school and found the career where she felt right at home. As the years go on, working with her clients and their unique hair needs has never been boring, and provides her with an ongoing challenge. As a salon owner, she is dedicated to passing on her love of hair to the next generation of stylists.

She shares her home with her husband and her son, two cats, and eleven chickens. In her free time, you might find her in her garden growing veggies and spoiling her chickens, in the woods foraging for mushrooms, or in the kitchen putting it all together. She also loves two wheeled transportation, splitting her riding time between Athena, her bicycle, and Baby Blue, her motorcycle.

You might be surprised to learn that Layla has completed 2 major bike tours, one from Portland to Washington DC, and the other down the Oregon and California coasts.

Favorite genres/ artists in music?

As a kid I was into the pop divas of the 80’s: Cyndi Lauper (the hair!), Madonna, Janet Jackson

As a teen, grunge captured my imagination: Nirvana, The Cranberries, Pearl Jam

In my early 20’s, I was a rave DJ, so dance music artists, especially with a world beat were my favorites: Thievery Corporation, Massive Attack, Transglobal Underground

Currently, my love for pop divas has come full circle: SIA, Lady Gaga, Chappel Roan, but my ears always perk up for dance beats, no matter what genres are mixed in.

Favorite shows/ movies?

Star Trek (duh) and all its spin offs.

Star Wars and most of the spin offs (Andor holding a special place in my heart for its relevancy)

The Back to the Future trilogy - always classic

Currently (2026) I’m binging the original X-files

Anything with a speculative fiction take on the world interests me first and foremost, but there’s always room for cult classics like The Princess Bride, and the Wizard of OZ.

Favorite products you’re currently using?

I love Dollylocks shampoo and conditioner for the regular care of my locs

For curls, Mousse Def is my go to styler

For all hair types, Suncatcher Power C leave in is a light hair moisturizer that smells great!

What is your signature style?

Layering texture on texture (curling my own locs) has been my own signature style for the past decade, which means I’m due for a big change soon. My point of fashion currently involves layering dresses and skirts, crazy leggings, and a healthy dose of animal print.

In the salon, I love creating shapes that move with tons of texture. I love crafting bespoke short cuts that practically style themselves, and I love bringing out someone’s natural texture for the first time.

Who is your dream client?

I love working with creative minds, entrepreneurs, and independent thinkers. People who value individual expression and use their hair as a signal of their place in the world. I love the chance to create unique styles that tell a story for people who are writing their own.
